On a warm June evening in 1899, the little Woodbury County town of Salix was struck by a devastating tornado.

In only a few minutes, homes were destroyed, families were injured, and three members of one family lost their lives.

But among the accounts of the destruction is one peculiar detail that has survived for more than a century:

A man’s coat was reportedly found hanging in a tree—still buttoned.

The Storm Arrives

On June 11, 1899, severe storms swept across western Iowa.

Near Salix, the tornado struck the farm of William Malloy, destroying the family’s home.

William Malloy and two of his children were killed. His wife and other children were injured.

Newspaper reports from the days following the storm describe terrible destruction around Salix and neighboring communities, with buildings demolished, trees damaged, livestock killed, and debris scattered across the countryside.

The Coat in the Tree

Decades later, a Woodbury County history prepared by the Iowa Writers’ Program recorded some of the remarkable things people said they found after the storm.

Among them was the story of a man’s coat discovered hanging in a tree.

According to the account, the coat was still buttoned.

It’s the kind of tiny detail that makes an old story suddenly feel real.

We can understand that a tornado destroyed buildings.

We can read numbers showing how many people were killed or injured.

But then we picture someone walking through the wreckage the following morning and seeing a buttoned coat hanging from a tree.

And 1899 doesn’t seem quite so far away.

The Stories Hidden in Small Towns

Today, Salix is a quiet Woodbury County community.

There is little to suggest that more than a century ago, a deadly tornado tore through the countryside nearby and left behind stories people would still be telling generations later.

That’s what makes local history so fascinating.

Sometimes the biggest stories aren’t found in famous places.
